This month has seen the centenary of the birth of the great conductor Sir Georg Solti. Gramophone is celebrating with a major feature in our new November issue – out on November 2, though it will reach print and digital subscribers before then – which explores his career through his relationship with recording.

Decca, the label with which across 50 years Solti made some of the most iconic recordings to grace the catalogue, marks this anniversary by re-releasing perhaps the greatest of all those, his Wagner Ring cycle, in a deluxe box-set.

'The Solti Ring', as it is invariably simply known, redefined what was possible in the recording studio for classical music, its scale and ambition alone, let alone the thrilling performances themselves, earning it a place in any recording Hall of Fame. Decca has remastered the set – including for Blu-Ray – and released it in a beautifully presented celebratory set which also includes The Golden Ring BBC documentary about the project, Ring Resounding, producer John Culshaw's account of the sessions, and further in-depth background, including a reproduction of the reviews, articles and advertisements Gramophone published at the time and since. The set is limited to 7000 editions, of which the first was presented to Lady Valerie Solti by the label. You can find out details about Decca's other Solti anniversary reissues from Decca's website.

Gramophone has five of the sets to give away – to enter, follow this link: Win a deluxe box-set of Solti's Ring.
